Storing and Using Today's Ethanol Fuels - Government Fleet Magazine

With everything we have going on here at Bell Performance, one of the great things we get to do is collaborate with other industry resources and experts to share information and expertise.  There's always something new to learn and you can always benefits from another party's perspective.

In June 2017, Bell’s national training director James Dunst wrote an article for Government Fleet Magazine detailing some of the considerations that gasoline-powered fleets need to be aware of as they use today’s ethanol gasolines.  This is a big issue for government vehicles, as many government fleets (especially on the federal level) are required to use alternative fuels in some capacity. 

• As a general rule, the higher the ethanol content, the lower the energy content of the fuel
• You can reduce water condensation in the storage tanks by keeping them as full as possible
• Percentages of ethanol in fuel can corrode soft metals in small engines and off-road equipment
• Trace contamination of diesel storage tanks with ethanol gasoline has been shown to lead to microbe problems
